Abstract

In recent years, India has seen a significant change in its financial landscape with the quick rise of digital payment systems, such as the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) and various digital wallets. These tools have transformed how people save, spend, and manage their money in daily life. This study aims to examine how UPI and digital wallets have affected personal saving and spending behaviour among individuals in selected Indian states. The research looks into whether these digital payment methods encourage financial discipline or result in impulsive spending. The study uses both primary and secondary data sources. A structured questionnaire was distributed to users in different states, including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, to gather information about their usage patterns, frequency of digital transactions, and changes in saving habits. Secondary data was collected from official reports of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), and government publications related to digital finance. The gathered data were analysed using descriptive statistics, charts, and graphs to discover trends and behavioural changes. The findings show that UPI and digital wallets have made financial transactions faster, safer, and more convenient, particularly for young and middle-income groups. Many respondents noted that digital payments helped them track their expenses better through transaction records, leading to improved budgeting and savings awareness. However, the study also found that the convenience of instant payments sometimes promotes overspending and decreases control over cash outflow. The impact of digital payments on saving behaviour varied across income levels, age groups, and educational backgrounds. Overall, the study concludes that UPI and digital wallets are effective tools that enhance financial inclusion and transparency in the Indian economy. They have positively influenced saving habits for many users by offering real-time monitoring and easy access, but they also create challenges related to overspending due to their convenience. The research emphasizes the need for better financial literacy and awareness programs to help users find a balance between digital ease and responsible money management. These insights are valuable for policymakers, financial institutions, and technology developers looking to improve India’s digital financial ecosystem.
