Pullorum Disease: Bacillary White Diarrhoea
Abstract
Poultry provides humans with companionship, food and fibre in the form of eggs, meat and feathers. The demand for meat and eggs is also increasing with an increasing population. Birds are farmed under proper care for using their eggs and meat as a source of food. Their eggs and meat are a rich source of protein, vitamins and minerals in the human diet. Their waste material, i.e., faeces, is a good source of manure that enhances soil fertility. They need to be kept in a proper atmospheric environment to prevent them from any disease, and necessary prevention and treatment should be done. Pullorum is an acute systemic infectious disease in young chicks and chronic in adults. It is characterized by high mortality and white chalky faeces. Other than chicken, turkey, ducks, guinea fowl, pheasants, and quails may be naturally infected.
