GEOMEDICS v0.2.2 – A toy model of constrained curved space for glenohumeral biomechanics
Abstract
GEOMEDICS v0.2.2 – A toy model of constrained curved space for glenohumeral biomechanics GEOMEDICS v0.2.2 is a numerical toy model designed to explore the glenohumeral joint in a constrained curved space, rather than in a classical Euclidean framework. The model generates a synthetic glenoid surface (parametric patches) and simulates the rolling–sliding motion of a spherical humeral head under simple boundary conditions. For a given set of inputs (glenoid version and inclination, curvature, humeral offset, direction of loading), GEOMEDICS computes proxy descriptors of joint behaviour: functional contact area, barycentre of this area, instantaneous centre of rotation and simple indices of decentration. The goal is not to reproduce patient-specific anatomy but to provide an exploratory framework linking clinical reasoning in “curved space” (recentring, functional area, constrained trajectories) with quantitative outputs that can be reused in future in vivo and ex vivo studies. Several didactic scenarios are implemented, including B2-type glenoids and corrective reaming/osteotomy, to illustrate how changes in orientation or curvature affect contact patterns and the available functional area. This preprint describes the underlying assumptions, the mathematical structure of the toy model and examples of use in shoulder arthroplasty planning and rehabilitation research. GEOMEDICS v0.2.2 is intended as an open conceptual tool to stimulate discussion between clinicians, biomechanists and engineers about glenohumeral motion in constrained curved space.
