Implementation of the HIIT method in a Physical Education teaching unit for 4th grade of secondary education through a hybridization of pedagogical models of self-construction of materials and health education
Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: This study describes applying the HIIT method (High-Intensity Interval Training) in Physical Education classes for 10th-grade students (15-16 years old) under the LOMLOE legislative framework. Objectives: The study adapted HIIT training control parameters through an 8-session teaching unit that combined cardiorespiratory exercises (60" at 60% HRmax) with strength exercises (15" at 80% HRmax) for 10th-grade students. Two pedagogical models were implemented: self-construction of materials (recycled elements) and health education, aligned with the specific competencies of the curriculum. Methods: Students designed and presented their group routines. The results demonstrate that HIIT is effective for improving physical fitness and developing curricular competencies and personal autonomy. Conclusions: The intervention also promoted sustainable development goals (health, gender equality, and responsible consumption), demonstrating that it is possible to integrate advanced training methods in the educational context with appropriate adaptations.
