Structural Necessity in Multi-Scale Constraint Systems: Formal Limits of Single-Scale and Optimization-Based Models
Abstract
A central question in the formal analysis of complex systems is whether recurrent modeling failures reflect contingent features of particular domains or necessary limitations imposed by system structure itself. This paper establishes formal necessity results for systems governed by multi-scale constraint integration, showing that fragmentation, lock-in, information loss, and path dependence arise as logically unavoidable consequences of constraint architecture, independent of dynamics, optimization strategies, or agent rationality. Five core theorems demonstrate: (1) capacity constraints necessarily induce information distortion when cross-scale interference exceeds bandwidth; (2) single-scale models are structurally insufficient to reproduce stability-fragmentation transitions; (3) constraint interactions are non-additive, precluding aggregation without topological loss; (4) lock-in is geometrically inevitable once systems enter cross-scale constrained basins; (5) path dependence arises necessarily from constraint reconfiguration, even under reversible local dynamics. These results establish boundaries on admissible explanatory frameworks. Models violating multi-scale constraint structure are not merely incomplete but formally incapable of representing relevant system classes. The paper contributes to debates on model adequacy and explanation by showing that certain explanatory strategies fail not because of poor empirical fit, but because they violate structural constraints that make successful explanation logically impossible. By treating constraints as geometric structures defining feasible configuration spaces, the paper shows that these limitations follow from the topology of possibility spaces rather than from contingent failures of dynamics or rationality. The paper thereby contributes to an emerging constraint-geometric researchprogram by isolating the necessity claims that any adequate explanatory frameworkmust satisfy. Keywords: structural necessity, multi-scale systems, explanatory limits, formal impossibility, constraint geometry, path dependence
