Life as a Persistent Electrical State An Origin Hypothesis from Electrical Diffusive Entropy
Abstract
This work proposes a physical redefinition of the origin of life based on electrical diffusive entropy rather than molecular specificity. Conventional origin-of-life theories typically identify self-replicating molecules, metabolic networks, or genetic polymers as the starting point of biological evolution. In contrast, this study argues that life emerges when naturally occurring electrical potential differences become locally persistent within a non-equilibrium environment. We introduce the Electrical Diffusive Entropy Origin hypothesis, in which life is defined as a physical regime where electrical gradients, normally erased by diffusion, are temporarily retained by structural constraints. This retention enables self-reinforcement, accumulation of history, and the emergence of selection before the appearance of molecular information systems. Within this framework, RNA and DNA are not treated as the origin of life but as secondary stabilization mechanisms that compress and preserve pre-existing electrically persistent states across generations. Life is thus characterized not as a substance or a specific molecule, but as a phase-like transition in entropy management. By reframing life as a persistent electrical state, this hypothesis unifies metabolism-first, RNA-world, and hydrothermal vent models under a common physical foundation, while expanding the range of environments in which life-like regimes may arise. This perspective provides a testable, non-molecular, and universal account of how life can emerge from non-living matter. This perspective reframes the origin of life from a rare, lottery-like molecular accident into a natural phase transition that arises once specific physical conditions are satisfied. Life is not treated as an improbable miracle, but as an emergent regime that becomes inevitable when electrical potential persistence overcomes diffusive entropy.
