Abstract

This preprint introduces an interface-first structural doctrine for understanding survivability across biological, mechanical, infrastructural, informational, and cosmological systems. Rather than treating strength, control, or optimization as primary design drivers, the framework asserts that order precedes form, and that long-lived systems succeed by regulating how they engage their environment before committing force to their core. The work formalizes a set of non-negotiable invariants—energy boundedness, prevention of runaway coherence, distributed participation, graceful degradation, and rate matching—that determine whether a system can persist under repeated forcing. Central to the framework is the Thread Law, which explains why propagation, sensing, and interaction preferentially occur through low-mass filaments rather than bulk structures, and why failure often arises when such threads are over-trusted or insufficiently pruned. An ordered interface ladder is presented, describing progressive layers of engagement from probing and buffering through skin, localized action, and renewal, explicitly prohibiting direct core exposure. Complementing this, a topology-invariant impedance continuum describes how systems shift between regimes of shared resonance, balanced mediation, defensive limitation, and internal routing as forcing amplitude and rate increase. The framework further introduces an ordered response escalation spectrum—from deterrence and evasion through defense, control, and, as a last resort, force—showing that survivable systems minimize irreversible commitment and de-escalate whenever possible. These principles are consolidated into physics-first admissibility tests that allow candidate designs to be accepted or rejected prior to geometric or material specification.By remaining agnostic to form, materials, and control algorithms, the doctrine provides selection rules that apply equally to organisms, bridges, buoys, networks, and large-scale filamentary structures. The work offers falsifiable predictions, clear failure modes, and a foundation for incremental prebuilds, establishing a shared structural language for systems that must endure rather than dominate their environments.Keywordsinterface-first design; order precedes form; structural survivability; boundary dynamics; coherence control; resonance suppression; distributed systems; thread networks; graded interfaces; rate matching; graceful degradation; impedance continuum; biological inspiration; infrastructure resilience; systems theory; passive stability; failure prevention; filamentary propagation; boundary intelligence; escalation control
