Surgical Pathways to Exotic Spheres: A Refined h-Cobordism Calculus
Abstract
This paper explores a refined h-cobordism calculus as a sophisticated tool for understanding and constructing exotic spheres. The h-cobordism theorem, a cornerstone of high-dimensional topology, provides powerful conditions under which a cobordism between two manifolds is topologically trivial, i.e., diffeomorphic to a cylinder. However, the existence of exotic spheres---manifolds homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the standard sphere---demonstrates the subtlety of smooth structures. This work delves into the interplay between handle decompositions, Morse theory, and surgical operations to present an enhanced calculus. We aim to articulate how carefully controlled surgical modifications, guided by refined h-cobordism principles, can lead to the generation or identification of these non-standard smooth structures. The methodology re-examines the cancellation of handle pairs and the impact of framing on surgery, offering a more granular approach to constructing and analyzing manifold diffeomorphisms. By providing a theoretical framework for manipulating smooth structures via a precise sequence of surgical steps within an h-cobordism context, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of the classification problem for high-dimensional manifolds and the elusive nature of exotic differentiable structures.
