Redefining Advanced Heart Failure Training: Cross-Disciplinary Innovations and Novel Educational Frameworks
Abstract
Advanced heart failure (AHF) represents a growing global health burden characterized by complex pathophysiology, high morbidity and mortality, and escalating healthcare costs. Rapid therapeutic advancements—including mechanical circulatory support, transcatheter structural interventions, precision pharmacotherapy, and digital health integration—have significantly expanded the scope of AHF management. However, traditional cardiology training paradigms have not fully adapted to the interdisciplinary and technology-driven nature of modern AHF care. This evolving landscape necessitates a redefinition of educational strategies to better prepare clinicians for the multifaceted challenges associated with managing advanced-stage disease. This article explores innovative, cross-disciplinary training models designed to enhance competency in AHF management. Emphasis is placed on integrating cardiology, cardiac surgery, critical care, nephrology, palliative care, data science, and bioengineering into unified educational frameworks. Novel training approaches—including simulation-based learning, competency-based progression, virtual and augmented reality platforms, artificial intelligence–assisted decision-making, and collaborative team-based education—are examined for their potential to improve clinical proficiency, procedural expertise, and patient-centered outcomes. Additionally, this review discusses the importance of incorporating systems-based practice, health equity considerations, and implementation science into AHF curricula to address disparities in advanced therapies such as heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. The proposed framework highlights the role of continuous professional development, global training standardization, and outcome-driven educational metrics to ensure alignment with rapidly evolving therapeutic innovations. By redefining AHF training through interdisciplinary collaboration and emerging educational technologies, this model aims to cultivate a new generation of cardiovascular specialists capable of delivering comprehensive, precision-guided, and patient-centered care in advanced heart failure management.
