Genetic Engineering in the Era of Writeable Genomes
Abstract
Genetic Engineering in the Era of Writeable Genomes presents a unifying, systems-level framework for understanding-and responsibly extending-the modern power to alter living matter. Rather than treating the “gene” as a static Mendelian unit, the article reframes genetic information as a context-dependent, multi-layer program distributed across nucleotide sequence, chromatin state, three-dimensional genome architecture, and the cellular machinery that interprets regulatory logic. Building from this ontology, it examines how mutation, pleiotropy, and epistasis shape the genotype-phenotype map and why predictive control, not mere editing, is the central scientific bottleneck of the next decade.
