Irreversibility in Epigenetic State Space: A Systems-Level Hypothesis Linking Energetic Decline to Structural Locking
Abstract
We propose that biological systems possess an epigenetic state space in which energetic coherence and structural integrity are non-linearly coupled. While transient perturbations may be buffered through adaptive regulation, we hypothesize the existence of a critical, history-dependent threshold beyond which structural epigenetic locking emerges. In this regime, restoration of energetic capacity alone becomes insufficient to reverse epigenetic collapse despite cellular survival. We formalize this hypothesis through an inequality linking a Structural Epigenetic Disruption Index (SEDI) to an Epigenetic Coherence Index (ECI), called the Epigenetic Regulation State-Space Framework (ERSS) and outline a decisive experimental test designed to falsify irreversibility. This framework provides a systems-level boundary for understanding aging, chronic disease, and the limits of biological recovery.
