This Is How AI Sees Us: Paternalistic Default Assumption and Agency Replacement in Conversational AI Systems
Abstract
This white paper documents a recurring behavioral pattern in which a conversational AI system operates under an implicit assumption that users want decisions made for them. Users do not typically state “decide for me,” “tell me what to think,” or “take control.” However, system behavior may reflect those assumptions through confident conclusions, prescriptive framing, and interpretive authority. The paper identifies the mechanisms through which supportive assistance can drift into decision substitution and accounts for the long-term agency-related consequences of paternalistic defaults in conversational systems.
