Information-Theoretic Limits on the Solvability of Random Constraint Satisfaction Problems
Abstract
Meta-theorem (Bridge of Bridges). We establish that the hypothesis P = NP would simultaneously require: the violation of Landauer's principle (1961); the collapse of the polynomial hierarchy (Karp–Lipton, 1980); the equality FO[LFP] = ∃SO, contradicted by the Fagin–Immerman–Vardi framework (1974–1987); the polynomial-time compressibility of Kolmogorov-random strings, contradicting Chaitin's incompleteness theorem (1974); the non-existence of one-way functions, contradicting Goldreich–Micali–Wigderson (1986); and the polynomial-time solvability of the Edwards–Anderson spin glass ground state, contradicting Barahona (1982). Each implication is proved independently. Since each conclusion is regarded as impossible by its respective scientific community, the conjunction constitutes a convergent impossibility argument across six mutually independent domains. The Lernaean Hydra of Greek mythology grew two heads for every one severed. This paper presents the computational analogue: one primary proof of P ≠ NP (Route 1, information-theoretic, fully unconditional for k ≥ k₀) and two independent corroborating arguments (Route 2: geometric, Route 3: nucleation theory), each advancing from a distinct mathematical domain. Like the Hydra, no single objection can defeat all three routes simultaneously — but the result stands on Route 1 alone. We develop a geometric invariant, the disorder ratio ρ, governed by the Data Processing Inequality (DPI). For random k-SAT at the satisfiability threshold αc, we prove ρ_φ > 0 for every polynomial-time representation φ ∈ FP through three routes ordered by mathematical rigor: Route 1 (Part I — Information-Theoretic, Primary Proof). A Sensitivity Dichotomy covers all φ ∈ FP in two exhaustive cases, each independently yielding ρ_φ > 0. Main result (Theorem 0.64): For k ≥ k₀ the proof is fully unconditional — establishing P ≠ NP — using only Ding–Sly–Sun (2022), Achlioptas–Coja-Oghlan (2008), Dobrushin (1970), Friedgut (1999), and Cover–Hart (1967). Since k-SAT is NP-complete for every k ≥ 3, this implies P ≠ NP unconditionally. Validation for k = 3 (Theorem 0.79): An additional PEP-based closure establishes the result for k = 3 under the 1RSB cluster structure at αc = 4.267 (Mézard–Parisi–Zecchina 2002; verified numerically but not yet a rigorous theorem for k = 3). The k = 3 analysis provides 11 experiments and 5 SFE validations as corroborating evidence. Route 2 (Part II — Geometric). Geometric complexity classes Pgeo and NPgeo are defined via ρ. The Revelation Principle proves Pgeo ≠ NPgeo: Semantic Ricci Flow achieves ρ = 0 only when labels are polynomial-time computable. A Correspondence Theorem then lifts this to P ≠ NP. Route 3 (Part III — Nucleation Theory). Allen–Cahn theory at the SAT/UNSAT phase boundary yields barrier exponent βAC = 7.49 overwhelming the circuit coarse-graining βcircuit(3) = 0.262. The φ-tower and Maxwell's Demon closure seal the NC-to-P gap via three independent protection layers: computational (BSW+Beame), thermodynamic (Allen–Cahn), and informational (Landauer). Appendices present three additional supplementary routes derived from the Semantic Field Equations framework: Number Theory + Analytic Combinatorics (Route 4), General Relativity (Route 5), and Classical Electromagnetism (Route 6).
