An Analytical Study of Self-Help Groups in Dang District through the Lens of Indian Knowledge System
Abstract
This research paper explores the socio-economic dynamics of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in the Dang district of Gujarat, evaluated through the foundational principles of the Indian Knowledge System (IKS). While modern microfinance models often emphasize individualistic credit-plus approaches, the Dang district—characterized by its significant tribal population and unique ecological landscape—offers a fertile ground for studying collective empowerment rooted in traditional Indian ethos. The study employs an analytical framework to examine how SHGs in this region mirror ancient Indian concepts such as Shayok (cooperation), Sawayama (self-reliance), and Dharma (ethical conduct in commerce). Through a mixed-methods approach involving field surveys and qualitative interviews, the research assesses the efficacy of these groups in fostering financial inclusion and social capital. A central focus of the paper is the integration of IKS-based communal living and resource management with contemporary entrepreneurial practices. Findings suggest that the success of SHGs in Dang is deeply tethered to the tribal community's inherent "collectivist" psychology, which aligns with the IKS perspective of Vasudha Iva Kutumba am (the world is one family) applied at the grassroots level. The study highlights how traditional wisdom regarding sustainable agriculture and local craftsmanship is being leveraged through these groups to create a resilient local economy. Ultimately, this paper argues that viewing rural development through the lens of IKS provides a more culturally resonant and sustainable alternative to Western-centric developmental models. It concludes with policy recommendations for stakeholders to harmonize modern institutional support with indigenous organizational wisdom to further strengthen the SHG movement in tribal belts.
