Mainstreaming Indian Knowledge Systems in Higher Education: Transformative Perspectives under NEP 2020
Abstract
The Indian Knowledge System (IKS) reflects India’s long-standing intellectual and cultural traditions, covering areas such as philosophy, science, spirituality, ethics, and arts. Preserved through classical texts and educational traditions, IKS promotes holistic well-being, ethical living, and self-awareness, while also offering valuable perspectives for addressing modern societal challenges. This paper discusses the integration of IKS in higher education as a meaningful and transformative teaching approach in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Rather than treating IKS as additional content, the study emphasizes developing indigenous ways of thinking rooted in Bharatiya Gyan Parampara. By drawing on traditional educational practices such as the Gurukul system, dialogue-based learning, self-inquiry, and experiential learning, the paper shows how IKS can strengthen critical thinking, reflection, and value-based education. It also examines key challenges in implementation and suggests practical strategies, including curriculum redesign, teacher training, and institutional support, for effective integration of IKS in higher education.
