Abstract

The National Education Policy (NEP-2020) advocates a transformative vision for Indian higher education by integrating multidisciplinary learning, holistic development, and the revitalisation of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). Among the various knowledge traditions, music occupies a distinctive place as a medium that nurtures cognitive, emotional, cultural, and ethical growth. Music education, deeply rooted in India’s philosophical and spiritual heritage, has historically served as a tool for personality formation, social harmony, and value-based living. The present study examines the integration of IKS and music education within the framework of NEP-2020 in higher education institutions of Gujarat. A descriptive survey was conducted with a sample of 367 respondents comprising students and faculty members from selected universities. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analysed using percentage analysis, mean scores, t-tests, and chi-square tests. Findings reveal a strong perception that music education enhances emotional well-being, cultural identity, creativity, and interdisciplinary learning. Significant differences were observed between students and faculty regarding implementation challenges, though both groups acknowledged music as essential for holistic education. The study highlights the need for curriculum reforms, institutional support, and policy-level initiatives to embed music education within higher education. Integrating music with IKS can strengthen value-based education and contribute to the realisation of NEP-2020’s vision of comprehensive human development.
