IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA IN CHILDREN AND EFFECTIVE DIAGNOSTIC AND TREATMENT PATHWAYS
Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia is the most common nutritional anemia in childhood and a frequent reason for pediatric visits, laboratory testing, and supplementation. Its causes are usually predictable—insufficient dietary iron intake, rapid growth, prematurity, and excessive cow’s milk—yet it is often missed until hemoglobin falls substantially or developmental and behavioral concerns emerge. This article summarizes effective diagnostic and treatment pathways for iron deficiency anemia in children, with a practical emphasis on outpatient primary care.
