Abstract

The ball mill (broyeur à boulets) is a critical piece of size-reduction equipment in the pharmaceutical industry designed for the fine grinding of powders. It operates by rotating a cylindrical or spherical vessel typically made of metal or porcelain around a horizontal axis, causing impact and friction between the internal grinding balls and the product. By utilizing balls of varying diameters (1 to 10 cm), the device effectively crushes large particles and refines them into a very fine powder to optimize specific surface area, improve drug bioavailability, and ensure the stability of active ingredients. While the process offers advantages such as high grinding fineness and the ability to work under controlled atmospheres, it requires careful optimization of parameters like rotation speed and grinding time to mitigate risks of contamination and ensure a consistent particle size distribution.
