Abstract

Salbutamol is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist primarily indicated for the rapid relief of bronchospasm in patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). By selectively binding to beta-2 receptors in the lungs, it stimulates the production of cyclic AMP (cAMP), which leads to the relaxation of bronchial smooth muscles and a rapid increase in airflow. Structurally, it is a phenylethanolamine derivative with a tertiary butyl group that provides high selectivity for pulmonary receptors over cardiac beta-1 receptors. While highly effective for acute symptoms via inhalation or nebulization, its clinical use must account for potential side effects such as muscle tremors, tachycardia, and hypokalemia.
