Intelligent Underwriting Systems in Insurance: A Technical Review
Abstract
Typically, insurance underwriting has involved a lot of manual risk assessment that takes a lot of time and resources to do. However, with advances in technology such as artificial intelligence for underwriting, there now exists a way to automatically approve policies and create accurate assessments of risk significantly faster than before. By utilizing machine-learning algorithms, these new systems can quickly process and interpret large quantities of customer data, while analysis of unstructured medical records and declarations becomes possible through Natural Language Processing. The application of Explainable AI provides transparency of how Automated Decision-Making occurs. The use of Blockchain allows the secure retention of every record while at the same time allowing for an unchangeable Audit trail. Collectively, these technologies combine to form comprehensive platforms that transform underwriting from the traditional format. Data Engineering Pipelines can accommodate and manage multiple sources while simultaneously providing guarantees about the quality and consistency of the data. By utilizing Gradient Boosting algorithms to generate Risk Predictions, the Algorithms leverage Historical Data to produce a prospective view of Risk. Automated workflows allow for immediate approvals for low-risk applicants, along with the submission of complex applications to experts in the industry for further evaluation. The integration of these types of systems solves major industry issues regarding data privacy, model biases, and regulatory compliance. Today's underwriting systems develop a balance between automation and human oversight to maximize process efficiency and accuracy. The technological advancements discussed represent a major step forward in the digitalization of the Insurance Industry. The introduction of these systems delivers increased processing speed, improved consistency in decision-making, and enhanced customer experience throughout the entire value chain of insurance.
