Disruptive Innovation as Relational Frustration: System Breakdown and Reordering in Signed Networks
Abstract
Overview This study introduces a novel socio-physics and network-science framework for understanding disruptive innovation. Rather than viewing disruption merely as a market shift, this research models it as a "sign-flip shock" within signed networks—systems where relationships are defined by positive (cooperative/complementary) or negative (competitive/antagonistic) ties. The core of the study is the application of the Triadic Frustration metric ($\rho_F$) to quantify the structural disorder and "creative destruction" caused by a disruptive event. Key Features Systemic Perspective: Models innovation as a force that reconfigures the relational balance of an entire ecosystem. Topology Analysis: Compares how different network structures (Modular, Core-Periphery, Scale-Free, and Random) respond to disruptive shocks. Baseline Dependence: Demonstrates that the impact of innovation is highly dependent on the pre-existing order of the system. Predictive Potential: Offers a mathematical basis for a "disruption detector" that can signal when a system is approaching a tipping point. Methodology The provided work includes a detailed description of the Monte Carlo simulation logic, the use of masked triadic frustration for measuring disorder, and the application of bootstrap confidence intervals for robust statistical analysis. Call for Collaboration This is an open-theoretical framework intended for the public good. We invite researchers, data scientists, and economists to: Run simulations based on the logic described in the study. Apply the model to empirical datasets (e.g., alliance networks in the tech industry, supply chain shifts, or socio-political alignments). Refine the operators beyond sign-flip shocks to include structural rewiring or weight-modulation shocks. Goal By making this framework open, we aim to provide a strategic "navigation tool" for society to better anticipate and manage the systemic transitions brought about by radical technological changes. Keywords: Disruptive Innovation, Signed Networks, Social Balance Theory, Triadic Frustration, Complex Systems, Network Topology, Creative Destruction.
