Relational String Theory from Constraint-Entangled States
Abstract
We present a constraint-first reformulation of string theory in which spacetime geometry, time evolution, particle excitations, and vacuum data are emergent rather than fundamental. The primitive structure of the theory is a Hilbert space acted upon by gauge and Hamiltonian constraints, with physical states defined by invariance under these constraints. Within this framework, perturbative strings, holography, and non-perturbative matrix formulations correspond to shallow-kernel limits of an underlying deep-kernel theory whose ontology is relational and entanglement-defined. Using the standard one-loop background-field computation in the BFSS matrix model, we review how long-distance gravitational interactions arise from integrating out off-diagonal matrix fluctuations, yielding the characteristic V_eff ∝ r⁻⁷ scaling consistent with eleven-dimensional supergravity. Time evolution is shown to emerge relationally via conditional (Page–Wootters) dynamics within the constrained state space, and the string landscape is reinterpreted as a spectrum of relational frames when moduli are promoted to quantum degrees of freedom correlated with the observer subsystem. No modification of string theory’s mathematical machinery is proposed; rather, the work identifies a minimal ontological interpretation consistent with its non-perturbative realizations and exact dualities.
