Abstract

Current GitOps practices optimize for deployment speed and reliability but ignore carbon intensity, leading to unnecessary emissions in cloud-native delivery workflows. This paper presents CarbonGate, a framework that calculates projected carbon intensity of Kubernetes workloads during pull request review and blocks or schedules merges based on configurable carbon thresholds. We implement carbon estimation models using container resource profiles, integrate with WattTime and ElectricityMap APIs, and evaluate across 191,240 production deployments over six months. CarbonGate reduces carbon emissions by 23-31% compared to baseline GitOps workflows, with zero increase in deployment latency and 92% developer acceptance rate.
