Modular Low-Maintenance Vertical OWC Wave Energy System – Pilot Case: Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina
Abstract
This document presents a conceptual and technical proposal for a modular low-maintenance wave energy generation system based on a Vertical Oscillating Water Column (OWC) principle, designed for coastal fixed installation. The system converts wave motion into electrical energy through the oscillation of a confined water column, producing bidirectional air flow that drives an air turbine coupled to an electrical generator. The design eliminates moving parts underwater, prioritizing structural robustness, simplicity, and long operational life. The proposed configuration emphasizes: Modular construction using reinforced concrete Minimal mechanical complexity Low operational and maintenance requirements Continuous energy availability independent of solar radiation Suitability for harsh marine environments A pilot case is proposed for Comodoro Rivadavia (Chubut, Argentina), selected due to its consistent wave climate, rocky coastline, existing energy infrastructure, and technical–industrial profile. Estimated average output is approximately 1.5 kW per module, allowing scalable deployments for local energy supply. The system is intended for distributed, small-scale applications, such as: Coastal and port infrastructure Public lighting Monitoring and security systems Isolated or off-grid installations Reduction of conventional energy consumption This proposal does not aim to compete with large-scale power generation, but rather to complement existing energy systems through localized, resilient, and cost-effective wave energy utilization. The document is intended as a technical reference for pilot implementation, feasibility evaluation, and future replication, adaptable to other coastal regions with similar conditions.
