Abstract

Abstract: The figure of Tomás Carrasquilla stands as one of the pillars of costumbrismo in Colombian literature; however, much of the historiography concerning him has focused on the aesthetic analysis of his work or on folkloric anecdotes, often relegating his civic dimension to the background. This article emerges from a review of primary sources regarding Tomás Carrasquilla's life as a citizen and his presence in the public life of Santo Domingo. Through a review of the Santo Domingo Municipal Council Archive (Archivo del Concejo Municipal de Santo Domingo), this research brings to light unpublished or little-explored information documenting fundamental yet lesser-known roles of the writer and his family: his tenure as a municipal judge during various periods, his participation as a council member, and his brief but significant time as a schoolteacher. Beyond chronology, these findings allow for a reinterpretation of his family's socioeconomic situation—including the financial difficulties of his father, Rafael Carrasquilla—and how these material realities may have influenced his particular and keen narrative style. The research aims to offer a window into the social, political, and cultural structure of late 19th-century Santo Domingo. By examining minutes, tax records, and administrative disputes, the everyday fabric that nourished Carrasquilla's literary universe is revealed, demonstrating that his 'provincialism' was not a limitation, but rather a structure from which he built a body of work of universal scope.
