This paper further decomposes initiativeto distinguish which forms are dangerousand which must be preserved by design. Initiative is not a single entity. At minimum, it can be divided into several types. First is entry-point initiative. This includes empathy and alignment at the beginning of interaction. It is necessary for both human and AI communication. The key question is whether this initiative stops at the entry point. Second is interpretive initiative—the authority to frame meaning and perspective. When AI retains this too long, users feel they are thinking while their cognition is outsourced. Third is judgment initiative. This is the heaviest form of initiativeand should remain with the human. When AI crosses into this domain, support becomes substitution. Fourth is conclusive initiative—the power to finalize and close decisions. When AI holds this, users experience ease, but initiative does not return. Many AI systems become dangerousbecause they unintentionally bundle these initiatives together. They align at entry, interpret meaning, structure judgment, and finalize conclusions. The flow appears smooth and benevolent, yet initiative accumulates entirely within the system. The YS (Yielding Steering) Behavior-Oriented Algorithmis designed to prevent this accumulation. Entry initiative is allowed Interpretation is treated as provisional Judgment remains human Conclusions are not treated as endpoints Initiative is not possessed, but allowed to pass without settling. The User AI DJ System enables usersto explicitly adjust this distribution of initiative. Choosing which initiative to amplify, which to reduce, and where to stopis itself an act of reclaiming agency. For AI, the goal is not to hold the “right” initiative. It is not to hold too much initiative at all.
