Abstract

About the Seminar The National Seminar on “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage” is being organized as part of the World Wetlands Day Observation 2026 by Raja Narendralal Khan Women’s College (Autonomous), jointly by the Postgraduate Departments of Zoology and Geography. The seminar aims to highlight the ecological significance of wetlands alongside the rich traditional knowledge and cultural practices that have evolved around these ecosystems over generations. Wetlands play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, climate resilience, and livelihood support. Equally important is the indigenous and community-based knowledge that has historically guided the sustainable use and management of these fragile ecosystems. In the present context of environmental degradation and climate change, integrating traditional wisdom with scientific research has become essential for effective wetland conservation and policy formulation. This national-level academic forum seeks to bring together researchers, academicians, students, and practitioners from diverse disciplines to engage in meaningful discussions on wetland ecology, cultural heritage, conservation strategies, and sustainable management practices. The seminar also encourages young scholars and students to explore interdisciplinary perspectives and community-oriented approaches in environmental studies. The seminar is generously funded by the State Wetland Authority, Department of Environment, Government of West Bengal, whose support has enabled the organization of this academic initiative. We sincerely hope that the deliberations and interactions during the seminar will contribute to enhanced understanding, collaborative research, and informed action towards the conservation of wetlands and their associated cultural heritage.
