EM Driven Underwater Power Generation Plants (EM UPGPs) Version 1.
Abstract
EM Driven Underwater Power Generation Plants (EMUPGPs) Version 1 presents a next‑generation architectural model for harvesting tidal and current‑based energy using fully sealed, modular subsea power generation pods. The system replaces mechanically intensive components found in traditional tidal turbines and offshore wind systems with direct‑drive electromagnetic generation, governed EM loading, and distributed electronic control. Each EM UPGP integrates a slow‑turning hydrodynamic rotor, a sealed permanent‑magnet generator, onboard power conditioning, and autonomous control systems within a single replaceable pod. Maintenance is performed through rapid ROV‑based pod swaps, eliminating heavy‑lift vessels and reducing downtime from days to hours. The document defines the baseline 2 MW EM UPGP design, including rotor assembly, generator architecture, structural frame, materials, corrosion strategy, and subsea interface. An optional superconducting Mode C variant is introduced for high‑capacity applications requiring increased torque density and efficiency. Comparative analysis demonstrates that EM UPGPs achieve energy conversion efficiency comparable to modern tidal systems while significantly reducing operational expenditure and improving grid responsiveness through millisecond‑scale electromagnetic control. A staged technology readiness pathway outlines component validation, prototype development, array demonstration, and commercial deployment. This work provides a technically grounded, commercially realistic framework for a scalable underwater power generation system capable of achieving sub‑$50/MWh levelised cost of energy at array scale.
