Abstract

Love, Loss & Legacy: Solungkoi, Robinson, and Colonial Encounters in British North Borneo is a digital book that explores the intersection of folklore, emotion, and colonial history in Sabah through the enduring legend of Solungkoi and Robinson. Blending oral traditions with historical records from the British North Borneo period, the book examines how a story of love and sacrifice reflects deeper themes of cultural encounter, power imbalance, and loss under colonial rule. By situating the Tamparuli Bridge legend within its historical and social context, this work highlights how local memory preserves truths often absent from official archives, revealing folklore as both a form of resistance and a living legacy that continues to shape identity and historical understanding in contemporary Sabah.
