Abstract

Communities in fundamental science or more generally natural sciences, have developed and operated large scale infrastructures . This includes knowledge of processes in various stages of gathering, preparing and using collections of data on a very large scale. Systems of managing data through different stages, from instrument building, data taking and finally data exploitation have been developed. This development generated discipline or even subdiscipline specific methods, data formats, analysis tools, workflows. With PUNCH, the now developed federated infrastructures for accessing and working with data collections focus directly on the ‘last golden mile’, i.e. the smaller projects and groups of users to enable them to use and execute the standard workflows and analysis processes of their field without having to again and again build up their own (small scale) infrastructures and teaching themselves to navigate the complicated international landscapes of their fields. We will exemplify this by a couple of use cases from subdisciplines within PUNCH.
