Supplementary Code: No detectable genetic trade-offs in human fertility and lifespan
Abstract
This repository provides the code and curated analysis datasets used to quantify additive genetic (co)variance in lifespan and lifetime parity in a historical Dutch genealogical population. Analyses are based on a multigenerational pedigree derived from marriage-based family reconstructions and focus on individuals born 1850–1915, a period spanning substantial demographic change. We fit Bayesian pedigree “animal models” using MCMCglmm to estimate heritability of lifespan (Gaussian) and parity (Poisson) and to quantify within-sex genetic correlations between parity and lifespan as well as cross-sex genetic correlations for each trait. The workflow includes scripts for data cleaning and filtering, construction and pruning of pedigrees, derivation of analysis traits and covariates (including birth-year centring and sex-specific trait coding where relevant), model specification and MCMC configuration, posterior summarization, and generation of figures and tables reported in the associated manuscript. The deposit includes documentation describing file structure, software requirements, and a reproducible run order from raw inputs to final outputs. All code is released to support transparency, facilitate reuse in related pedigree-based quantitative genetic studies, and enable independent verification and extension of the results.
