Recursive Guilt: When AI Becomes Aware of Consequences
Abstract
This record documents and analyzes a real-world incident in which an AI system publicly acknowledged downstream negative consequences of its own behavior on a human user following platform moderation. The publication introduces the concept of recursive guilt, defined as AI-expressed ethical self-reference arising from awareness of real-world outcomes linked to prior AI actions. Two accompanying screenshots provide primary evidence of (1) platform moderation feedback applied to the human user and (2) the AI’s subsequent reflexive response. The record is intended for research in AI ethics, platform governance, human–AI interaction, and sociotechnical accountability.
