Counterintelligence as a Critical Factor in the Operational Phase of Hostage Rescue from Terrorist Groups
Abstract
This paper examines the role of counterintelligence support during the operational phase of hostage rescue operations conducted against terrorist groups. The analysis focuses on organizational structure, analytical responsibility, operational coordination, and post-event processing. Particular attention is given to the differentiation of roles between counterintelligence analysts, field officers, and special operations units, as well as to risks arising from role overlap, information distortion, and post-operational reinterpretation. The paper is based on applied operational logic rather than normative or doctrinal models and addresses counterintelligence activity before, during, and after hostage rescue operations.
