Impedance Mechanics: A Mechanical Definition of Time and the Origin of Inertia
Abstract
Author's note (July 2026). Following a critical evaluation conducted after publication, the central derivations of this paper were found to be circular, and its numerical precision agreements were found to be fitting artifacts — the framework was, in effect, tuned to the targets it claimed to predict. I have retired the Impedance Mechanics framework in full, and this paper should not be built upon. One modest statement survives reformulation: along a null path, elapsed coordinate time equals slowness integrated along the path (t = ∫s dx); this is standard physics restated, not a novel result. The paper remains posted, with this note, for the integrity of the record. Impedance Mechanics is a theoretical framework that dissolves the quantum gravity problem, derives all eight postulates of quantum mechanics and the complete Standard Model gauge structure and particle mass spectrum, resolves the Hubble tension, identifies dark matter and dark energy without new particles or fields, and provides the first mechanical derivation of inertia — all from two points of departure from existingapproaches and three constitutive primitives, with zero free parameters. It is not a modification of existing physics; it replaces the foundation. The first point of departure is this: the universe requires no background geometry; the vacuum substrate is a six-degree-of-freedom micropolar elastic medium from which space, time, matter, and force all emerge. This does not suggest an ”aether” of any kind, because in this picture, matter is not a separate substance. Rather, it is the substrate itself, topologically excited into closed loops. Thus, from a single thing comes everything. The second point of departure marks a first in the literature: time is defined in concrete mechanical terms as t = ∫s dx, where s(x) is the metric slowness of the vacuum substrate. This statesthat time is the scalar accumulation of metric slowness s integrated over a spatial path. From these two departures, applied to a substrate characterized by three constitutive primitives (Yᵥ, s₀, Z₀), the known laws of physics follow as theorems. The quantum gravity problem — the incompatibility of General Relativity and quantum mechanics at the Planck scale — presupposes that the two frameworks are independent. In this framework, that presupposition is absent: gravity (g = c³ aₜ, G = c⁴/(8π Yᵥ)) and all eight postulates of quantum mechanics are both theorems of the same constitutive relations. They were never independent. The UV divergences that render perturbative quantum gravity ill-defined do not arise because the substrate's topological grain length L_topo = √(8π)l_P provides a physical Planck-scale cutoff derived from temporal self-consistency. The gravitational anomaly — the technical obstruction to consistently placing quantum field theory in a curved spacetime background — cancels exactly as a theorem of the confinement result, with Q_lepton + Q_hadron = 1 as the structural reason. The framework derives: Newton's constant (G = c⁴/(8π Yᵥ)); the Equivalence Principle as a theorem; the first mechanical account of inertia (m aₜ = dpₜ/dx); all eight postulates of quantum mechanics including the Born rule P = |ψ|², the exact coefficient ℏ/2 of the uncertainty principle, and the physical origin of i; Maxwell's equations; the Standard Model gauge group U(1)×SU(2)×SU(3) as the automorphism group of the substrate's internal geometry; left-handed chirality and quark confinement as theorems; the complete charged lepton mass spectrum to better than 0.01% via a derived Koide formula; and the QCD confinement scale Λ_QCD = 217.08 MeV to 0.04%. A unified nonlinear elastic Lagrangian is derived with no free parameters, coupling all three sectors through the master identity Z₀·Yᵥ·L²_topo = μ₀c²ℏ. All three gauge coupling constants are derived: α = Z₀/(2R_K) to 0.0001%, sin θ_W = 1/(1+γ^(17/18)) to 0.121%, and Λ_QCD = πm_e/(αγ^(1/6)) to 0.024%. All four gauge anomaly conditions cancel exactly as a theorem. The proton is stable by two independent theorems. The Lagrangian is classically and quantum-mechanically stable, with UV finiteness by construction. The Universal Refractive Index γ = H₀,local/H₀,CMB = 1.083179160 resolves the Hubble tension to 0.001%, the MOND acceleration threshold to 0.10%, and identifies dark matter as longitudinal substrate polarization — gravitationally present and electromagnetically silent by structural necessity, predicting the null results of LUX, XENON1T, and PandaX-4T — and dark energy as the substrate's restorative elastic pressure. The full general relativistic light deflection δφ = 4GM⊙/(bc²) = 1.7512 arcseconds is derived without the tensor machinery of General Relativity and confirmed to 0.02%. Six falsifiable predictions are made, including the secular drift of γ at 5.7×10⁻¹² yr⁻¹ and the linear growth of the Hubble tension with redshift, testable with DESI and Euclid. The framework requires no background. It requires only the mechanical definition of time.
