The Cultural and Educational Mission of the "Postoyanstvo 1856" Chitalishte in Lom: A Model for Modernization along the Danube.
Abstract
Abstract This paper analyzes the "Postoyanstvo 1856" Chitalishte in Lom as a foundational institution of the Bulgarian National Revival. It explores how its strategic location on the Danube facilitated a unique cultural transfer of European Enlightenment ideas into Bulgarian society. The study highlights Krastyo Pishurka’s 1848 initiative of establishing the first "Chitalishte" (community center) and the institution's 1856 official founding, which catalyzed the birth of Bulgarian professional theatre. By examining early musical-dramatic performances, the research defines the Chitalishte as a distinctive Bulgarian socio-educational model that contributed to the modernization of the Balkans.
