Abstract

The right to knowledge and freedom of speech is essential for democracy and effective governance. In Bangladesh, the media plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion and promoting accountability. Nonetheless, political pressure, censorship, and regulatory deficiencies frequently impede media freedom. This paper examines the establishment of a Media Commission in Bangladesh as an autonomous entity to safeguard and advance media freedom. This research employs qualitative methods, including case studies from India, South Africa, and the UK, as well as interviews with journalists, politicians, and civil society leaders, to propose a framework for establishing a Media Commission and assess its potential implications. The results suggest that a well-organized Media Commission can enhance openness, accountability, and democratic government in Bangladesh.
