Hope and Flourishing | Seminar
Abstract
This seminar offers a reflective, evidence-informed introduction to the VIA character strength of hope within a university and higher education context. Hope is framed as the capacity to sustain optimism, direction, and motivation toward meaningful future goals, even in the presence of uncertainty, adversity, and setbacks. The seminar explores hope as an active psychological strength involving positive future orientation, belief in personal agency, and the ability to identify pathways toward valued goals. Participants are guided through the definition and benefits of hope, including increased resilience, perseverance, purpose, and academic engagement. The programme examines hope across a continuum of underuse, optimal use, and overuse, highlighting the importance of balancing optimism with realistic goal-setting and adaptability. Through affirmations, reflective questions, applied examples, narrative integration, and structured daily practices, students are supported in cultivating hope as a practical resource for sustaining motivation and well-being. The seminar concludes with a WOOP-based planning framework that enables participants to translate hopeful thinking into intentional action aligned with their academic and personal aspirations. Learning Outcomes By the end of this seminar, participants will be able to: Define hope as a character strength associated with optimism, agency, and future-oriented motivation in the face of challenge and uncertainty. Explain the key benefits of hope, including increased resilience, perseverance, positive mindset, and a stronger sense of purpose in academic and personal contexts. Recognize patterns of underuse, optimal use, and overuse of hope, and understand how each can influence motivation, goal pursuit, and well-being. Reflect on their own experiences of hope, including moments of discouragement, uncertainty, or renewed motivation during their university journey. Apply hope in practical ways, such as setting achievable goals, visualizing success, building supportive relationships, and seeking help when needed. Connect hope to goal-directed behaviour, including clarity of goals, belief in personal agency, and flexibility in identifying pathways forward. Integrate hopeful thinking into daily routines, using reflective practices and structured activities that support sustained motivation and resilience. Develop a personalized hope action plan using the WOOP framework, identifying wishes, desired outcomes, potential obstacles, and concrete strategies for maintaining hope in higher education.
