Abstract

The Taiping Rebellion (1850–1864) killed between twenty and seventy million people, making it the dead- liest civil war in recorded history by an order of magnitude. Western historiography treats it as a regional crisis of Qing decline. This monograph argues that it is, instead, the index case for a general phenomenon: what happens when the Abrahamic congregational chassis—the specific organizational technology of ex- clusive salvation, eschatological urgency, and congregational structure—enters a civilizational immune system with no prior exposure. We demonstrate that the Taiping catastrophe is structurally isomorphic to the European Wars of Religion (1524–1648), that the isomorphism holds at the level of mechanism rather than analogy, and that both events instantiate a single epidemiological law: the mortality cost of first contact between a universalist congregational memeplex and a host civilization scales with the naïveté of the immune system, not with the quality of the memeplex’s theology. Hong Xiuquan’s doctrine was psychotic and incoherent. It killed more people than the Thirty Years’ War. The theology is not the operative variable. The chassis is the weapon. We then trace the immunological succession: the Taiping catastrophe as index infection; the Commu- nist revolution as a secularized variant of the same congregational technology, deployed by an operator who understood the chassis; the post-Mao settlement as deliberate attenuation—a domesticated strain engineered to occupy the receptor sites and prevent reinfection; Tiananmen Square (1989) as an acute im- mune response to a detected reinfection attempt; and the Hong Kong protests (2019–2020) as the most recent transmission event, exhibiting the identical epidemiological signature. The thesis is not political. It is thermodynamic. The Chinese Communist Party is not defended here as good or just but as immuno- logically competent: an attenuated virus that occupies the congregational niche so that the wild-type strain cannot. The framework is formalized using the apparatus developed in The Device Physics of the Sacred (Elliott, 2026a) and Egregore Device Physics (Elliott, 2026b). Falsifiers provided. Keywords: congregational epidemiology, Taiping Rebellion, Thirty Years’ War, memetic transmission, Abrahamic chassis, civilizational immunity, egregore, attenuated virus, CCP, Tiananmen, Hong Kong, device physics of the sacred
