Abstract

We present a framework in which the Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein quantum statistics arise as inevitable consequences of modeling elementary excitations as topological defects in a U(1)symmetric vacuum field. Starting from a complex scalar field with spontaneous symmetry breaking, we identify stable excitations with framed vortex singularities characterized by an integer winding number w. The configuration space of N such defects in d spatial dimensions has fundamental group π1(CN) ∼ = SN for d ≥ 3 and π1(CN) ∼ = BN for d = 2, recovering the standard topological classification of Leinaas and Myrheim. Our central new result is a Berry-phase calculation showing that the adiabatic exchange of two defects with winding numbers wi,wj produces the geometric phase Θex = π(wi + wj)/2, which for identical defects (wi = wj = w) yields the exchange factor (−1)w. This provides a physical selection mechanism determining which representation of π1(CN) is realized for a given particle species: the parity of the topological charge selects between symmetric and antisymmetric sectors. We construct the grand canonical partition function with a topological projector commuting with the Hamiltonian and derive a unified occupation number ¯n = [eβ(ϵ−µ) − (−1)w]−1 that recovers Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac distributions as its only two limits. We connect the winding-number parity to the spinor structure of the rotation group via π1(SO(3)) ∼ = Z2, providing a topological derivation of the spin-statistics relation (−1)w = (−1)2S analogous to the Finkelstein-Rubinstein mechanism for skyrmions. The framework naturally incorporates anyonic statistics in d = 2 and makes specific predictions regarding modified two-particle interference patterns and the energy scaling hierarchy of defect excitations.
