In Vitro Anti-Dandruff Activity of Opuntia Elatior M. Against Malasszia Furfur
Abstract
Dandruff is a common problem where your scalp gets itchy and flaky. It's mainly caused by a fungus called Malassezia furfur. People often use special medicines to treat dandruff, but these can have side effects and might not work well over time. So, scientists are looking at plant-based treatments that are safer and work well. This study looked at how a plant called Opuntia elatior Mill. can help with dandruff. They collected the plant, dried it, and then used a special method to get its juice and other important parts. They took dandruff samples from healthy people and found the fungus Malassezia furfur in them. They tested how well the plant's juice and extract could stop the fungus from growing. They used different strengths of the plant's extract: 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. They found that the stronger the extract, the better it worked to stop the fungus. The extract worked best at 100%, while the juice wasn't as strong. The study showed that the plant Opuntia elatior Mill., especially its extract, could be a good treatment for dandruff. It might be used to make safe and effective herbal anti-dandruff products. More tests with people are needed to confirm these results.
