Remote and Hybrid Work Culture: Redefining Employee Engagement and Organizational Commitment
Abstract
The rapid global transition to remote and hybrid work arrangements has reshaped contemporary organizational life and fundamentally altered how employees interact with their work, colleagues, and employers. While remote work is not a new phenomenon, its unprecedented scale following the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated scholarly interest in understanding how flexible work environments influence core organizational behavior constructs such as employee engagement and organizational commitment. Existing literature has established that engagement—characterized by vigor, dedication, and absorption—plays a critical role in enhancing performance and sustaining organizational effectiveness. Similarly, organizational commitment has been shown to predict turnover intentions, discretionary effort, and long-term organizational stability. However, much of this foundational knowledge is grounded in traditional, co-located work settings, leaving important questions unanswered about the relevance and applicability of existing models in distributed work environments.
