Spatial Modeling of Archaeological Complexes in the Central and Eastern Balkans
Abstract
This study examines the monumental domed architecture and territorial organization within the Sboryanovo (Sveshtari) reserve since 1982, marking a turning point in the analysis of the 1st millennium BC. The site is identified as a central hub in a complex network of structures that objectifies regional economic and social processes. By implementing international taxonomies (Pleiades Gazetteer) and GIS-based modeling (viewshed and cost-distance analysis), the research transcends descriptive methods in favor of structural landscape modeling. The analysis of burial mounds (tumuli) and technological markers, such as grey wheel-made pottery, enables an objective reconstruction of territorial dynamics independent of conflicting ancient traditions, successfully achieving a "golden mean" in scholarly interpretation.
