Abstract

Audit Substitution names a recurring structural move in complex systems: thereplacement of substantive understanding with auditable artifacts. Under scrutiny, what matters is not only what is true or effective, but what can be verified by thirdparties through records, metrics, checklists, and traceable evidence. Systemstherefore behave as if they optimize for auditability—forms of proof that arerepeatable, inspectable, and defensible—often at the expense of nuanced judgment, context sensitivity, or causal understanding. This capsule defines Audit Substitutionas an impersonal lens. It does not attribute intent, does not name institutions, anddoes not prescribe actions. It specifies observable traces and minimal validityconditions to keep claims structural and non-ideological. The governance relevanceis functional: auditability can become a substitute for understanding becausedefensibility is rewarded asymmetrically. The document contains no tactics, nointerventions, and no recommendations; it names a stable operation for cumulativecitation wherever ‘what can be audited’ becomes ‘what is real.’
