Ultrasound-Guided Bladder Puncture
Abstract
Suprapubic cystostomy is a widely used procedure in the management of acute urinary retention, especially when urethral catheterization fails or when prolonged catheterization is required. This procedure is particularly relevant in resource-limited settings, where ultrasound-guided percutaneous techniques have proven to be more effective and associated with lower morbidity compared with urethral catheterization or open techniques [1]. The use of reusable metallic trocars or large surgical blades has been shown to be a safe and cost-effective alternative in low-resource environments, allowing the procedure to be performed under ultrasound guidance even in challenging conditions, such as in obese patients or those with lower abdominal scars [2,3].
