Abstract

The analysis of data on spending for road infrastructure maintenance in the period 2019–2023highlights a deeply heterogeneous reality, influenced by economic, climatic, political, andinfrastructural factors. While high-income countries generally show sustained and in some casesgrowing expenditure, emerging economies and non-OECD countries display lower and oftendiscontinuous investment levels, albeit with some interesting exceptions. Road maintenancerepresents a fundamental item in transport budgets, as it contributes to everyday mobility safety, thereduction of logistics costs, and the resilience of infrastructure.
