Abstract

This paper examines the constitutive limits of dialogue-based support practices through the philosophy of late Wittgenstein. Rather than treating “overreach” in support—such as claims of deep inner understanding, narrative reconstruction, or authoritative meaning attribution—as an ethical failure or professional misconduct, the paper conceptualizes it as a grammatical impossibility grounded in the public and rule-governed nature of language. Drawing on Wittgenstein’s accounts of meaning as use, the critique of private language, and the distinction between explanation and description, the paper argues that attempts by supporters to access inner mental states or to determine the “true meaning” of another’s experience rest on a misunderstanding of how meaning is constituted. Such practices implicitly assume an authorial position over meaning that language itself does not permit. The paper further distinguishes between narrative coherence and genuine understanding, showing that explanatory or interpretive closure may produce a sense of insight without restoring practical linguistic competence in lived contexts. In place of meaning production or interpretive authority, the role of the supporter is reconceptualized as maintaining “friction”: resisting premature explanations and allowing language to regain functionality within ordinary forms of life. By reframing support overreach as a constitutive limit rather than a normative violation, the paper offers a minimalist and non-authorial model of dialogue-based support. This model does not negate practical intervention but clarifies the conditions under which supportive dialogue can remain intelligible without collapsing into paternalism or theoretical overreach.
