Day-to-day life,we are told, should be optimized. Defaults are praised.Automation is encouraged.Intervention is discouraged. But judgment, like any skill, atrophies when unused. A restartable societycannot rely on emergency thinking alone. It requires practice. In narratives symbolized by Astro Boy,humans did not wait for catastropheto think. They argued in advance. They disagreed openly. They rehearsed values in ordinary moments. Modern systems tend to suppress this. Consensus is automated.Disagreement is friction.Manual override is inefficiency. Over time, people lose confidencein their own judgment. This is why “returning” feels frightening. To sustain judgment, society must normalize low-stakes choice: Spaces where humans decideeven when AI could Acceptance of slower outcomes Visible disagreement without penalty Judgment should not appear heroic. It should feel routine. The goal is not perfect decisions. The goal is familiarity with deciding. Only then does re-entry stop feeling like riskand start feeling like responsibility resumed. Disclaimer This section considers judgment as a practiced social capacity. It does not argue against optimization, but against cultures that eliminate everyday opportunitiesfor human decision-making.
