Einstein's Unfinished Unification: Space–Time, Ether, and the SP3 Space-Phase Framework
Abstract
In his 1920 Leiden lecture, Albert Einstein expressed the hope that gravitational ether(space) and electromagnetic field (matter) might one day be comprehended as a singleunified conformation. He anticipated that such a unification would dissolve the conceptualdivide between space and matter and complete the theoretical program initiated byFaraday and Maxwell. Yet general relativity ultimately retained a structural separationbetween spacetime geometry and matter-energy fields. This paper argues that the SpacePhase 3 (SP3) framework may be interpreted as a continuation of Einstein’s unfinishedaspiration. In SP3, space, matter, radiation, and time are not separate ontologicalcategories but regimes of a single dynamic substrate: space-phase. Matter representssaturation of space-phase; radiation represents transport on space-phase; gravityrepresents stiffness gradients within space-phase; and time represents memory updatingwithin the medium. The contrast between ether and matter thus fades, not merelygeometrically, but ontologically.
