Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct the Japanese concept of ``tsui'' (対)---pairedopposites---as a universal set of conceptual axes. While Japanese contains anexceptionally rich inventory of lexical pairs, these pairs have rarely beenorganized systematically or examined as a coherent cognitive structure. Toaddress this gap, approximately one thousand Japanese tsui were collected andthen consolidated through the removal of lexical duplicates, structuralredundancies, and near-synonymous variants. This process yielded 277 coreaxes. Next, culturally specific pairs that cannot be translated naturally intoEnglish (e.g., ``honne/tatemae'') were excluded, and pairs that collapse intothe same English expression (e.g., multiple forms of ``rise/fall'' or``dense/sparse'') were unified. Through this refinement, a final set ofapproximately 230--240 universal conceptual pairs was extracted. These pairs span fifteen domains, including space, time, quantity, sensation, emotion, society, nature, life, action, thought, structure, economy, andtechnology. The resulting set functions as a conceptual operating system: aminimal relational framework that captures how humans perceive, categorize, and interpret the world. This work provides a foundation for applications incognitive science, linguistics, philosophy, artificial intelligence, andcross-cultural education.
