Abstract

The present study focuses on the taxonomic families of plant species found in the Velachery area, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. With the purpose of documenting plant species, a site visit was conducted from January 2024 to June 2025. This survey was restricted to the nearby regions of Velachery Lake and 100 Feet Road, and partially across the entire campus area of Guru Nanak College. The flowering season of randomly visible plants was recorded and identified using standard flora and Plants of the World Online (POWO). The aim was to identify and document the species for further investigation. A total of 50 plant species belonging to 21 families were recorded. Apocynaceae was noted as the most dominant family, and Malvaceae members also dominated the area. A phenogram was designed as a chart or algorithm representing the flowering of plant species across the 12 months of the year. Maximum flowering was observed during the spring season.
